Lab Updates

Hi everyone! My name is Ian and I am a new PhD student with Josh. As part of our first term, we had to take Josh’s course “Geospatial Data Mining,” in which we learned how to find, manipulate, and analyze satellite images. Our main goal of the course was a project that we designed using some of the geospatial techniques we learned in class. In other years the projects were turned into papers, so I was excited for the possibilities this project had.

With the start of the Fall 2019 term, we’d like to welcome two additions to the SEAL team, Ian McGregor and Xiaojie (J) Gao! Both are new PhD students in the Geospatial Analytics program, and part of a vibrant new cohort.

Nick Kruskamp and Josh Gray presented research at the annual US-IALE meeting in Ft. Collins, Colorado. NC State’s Center for Geospatial Analytics was well-represented with additional presentations from Chris Jones, Lindsey Smart, Devon Gaydos, Nikki Inglis, Kunwar Singh, and Georgina Sanchez.

Nick Kruskamp and Josh Gray travelled to the annual AGU Fall Meeting in Washington D.C. There, Nick delivered an excellent presentation on his work remotely sensing Sudden Oak Death. Read more about Nick’s first AGU experience.

NC State’s Center for Geospatial Analytics admitted its inaugural Geospatial Analytics Ph.D. class. Find out what the students, including SEAL’s own Nick Kruskamp, have to say about their work.

Dr. Josh Gray and fellow NC State Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources (FER) faculty member Dr. Erin Sills have been working together to better understand how effective (or not) tropical deforestation mitigation efforts have been.

Dr. Gray took home top honors in the graphics/illustration category for faculty and staff in this year’s NC State University Envisioning Research competition. The winning image seen above (“Water Colors”) shows a composite of three Landsat images over Lake Urmia, Iran.

SEAL PI Dr. Josh Gray recently received funding through NASA’s LCLUC program to create an operationally produced, moderate resolution phenology product from Landsat and Sentinel-2 data. The proposal, “An Operational Multisource Land Surface Phenology Product from Landsat and Sentinel 2” was led by Dr.

Krishna Singh (SEAL Postdoc) won the grand prize and Nick Kruskamp took home an honorable mention in the 2018 NCSU CNR Graduate Research Symposium poster competition. Krishna’s poster documented his investigation into alternative, water saving cropping strategies for California’s Central Valley.
