Lab Updates

Hard to believe that in just a week, we will be finished with the Spring term here in warm Raleigh, with all the trees fully-leafed out and the dread of the incoming mid-summer humidity slowly starting to settle.

Even though the Spring term is almost over, SEAL has been doing some exciting things! Expect a couple updates here over the next few weeks, but first we’re going to focus on some research exposure.

Our SEAL member Izzi Hinks won last year’s Travel Award of Center for Geospatial Analytics (CGA). The award supported her attending the past 2021 AGU Fall conference in New Orleans where she presented her recent research “Monitoring crop development in smallholder farms using remotely sensed time series data augmentation”.

Over the past few weeks SEAL has revamped itself in two significant ways. First, our very own Nick Kruskamp is now officially Dr. Kruskamp! He successfully defended his dissertation on 17 December to a large zoom audience, and will soon be taking his talents to RTI International, where he will be their newest Research Geospatial Scientist.

We haven’t had many posts here because with the return to a mostly-in-person office format, the semester has apparently flown by. That being said, with the return of AGU this year (12-17 Dec), SEAL is excited for a number of us to go to New Orleans in person to present our research using both oral and poster presentations.

We want to give a big shout-out to our two new SEAL members, Owen and Jenna, who are joining Josh and Laura on the MUTATED project.

Coming into remote sensing, one of the aspects of geospatial analytics that is super important is learning how to read maps. Now I don’t mean learning how to read a traditional map of the world (although understanding the different projections is, in my opinion, essential.

Last Wednesday, Feb 26th, SEAL Ph.D. students Nick, Ian, and Xiaojie participated in the 3rd annual CNR graduate research symposium. Both Ian and Xiaojie had their poster presentations about current research work.

This must be the most difficult Chinese New Year for decades. Since late December, the outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus – first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China – has infected more than 30,000 people with more than 500 deaths.
